You know what they always say, “It’s what’s on the inside that counts.” That... is not always true. Especially for houses! Your curb appeal is a first impression. It provides a gut reaction for what is to come once they cross the threshold into your home.
So let’s quickly explore the most impactful changes you can make to increase the appeal, at the curb.
#1 Paint the front door. Your front door is the first thing people see when they look at your house. They will literally be interacting with it in a few seconds when they enter, so make sure it stands out as fresh and inviting. Be sure to paint it a color that is coordinated with the rest of the exterior, and consider adding that same color to other aspects of the outside, like your mailbox.
#2 is change your mailbox if it’s old. You don’t need to break the bank and go for the full brick structure, but keeping an updated mailbox is a sign that the rest of the house is more likely to be well kept and updated. Just making sure the box is freshly painted and the post is straight will go a LONG way.
#3 update and add exterior lighting. Lighting, inside and out, is everything when it comes to setting the mood and staging for a sense of warm invitation. Add soft but functional lights to the entryway and sidewalk, and even the home’s exterior if it’s in your budget. Lighting the front of your home adds dimension and a dramatic flair to your curb appeal.
#4, power wash everything! Since dirt accumulates slowly over time, most people don’t even know how dirty the exterior of their home actually is. The siding, facia boards, sidewalk, and driveway are all prime candidates for a good power washing. And if you don’t own a power washer, no fear. There are plenty of reputable local businesses that will take on that job for a good price. Of course there’s more - landscaping touches, displaying your house numbers, window shutters...the list goes on.
These are a few of the ones I feel are most important to keeping things looking fresh and welcoming. If you’d like to get some of this done on YOUR house, shoot me a message and I’ll be happy to pass along some recommendations of reputable handymen that can help you out.
